Managing Performance

There may be times when an employee has difficulty in achieving the performance standards required in their job, on occasion the job may have changed to such an extent that they no longer have the required skills or aptitude for the role.

In these circumstances the Performance Management Procedure provides an appropriate framework within which to determine the right level of support to encourage improvement. This support may include greater supervision or assistance, reviewing workload and targets, additional training or changes to working arrangements, and at times redeployment to a different job.

It is however important to ensure that support is well thought through and provided consistently and fairly, this includes consideration of the appropriate procedures to be used. The HR Partner or HR Adviser for your School / Function will be able to advise and will support managers to deal with often complex situations, their advice should always be sought at an early stage.

In circumstances where the employee has difficulty in achieving the performance standards required due to suffering an illness or accident, then the Ill Health Procedure is followed which can be found on the Sickness Absence webpage.
