Teaching methods

The MSc Speech and Language Therapy course combines theoretical knowledge with clinical practice, and you’ll gain hands-on experience right from the start.

Teaching is delivered through lectures and seminars, giving you the opportunity to learn in small groups with your peers and apply theory to clinical case studies.

Supervision

Qualified speech and language therapists will provide individual supervision during your dissertation module and clinical placements.

鈥淭he highlight of this course is that we have lots of different guest lecturers. This is a great way to hear first-hand what it鈥檚 like having a career in speech & language therapy and understand its multidisciplinary aspects.鈥 - Vivian W, MSc SLT Student Year 2

Clinical observations

In your first year, you鈥檒l observe sessions in our Speech and Language Therapy Clinic. These are supported by tutorials.

In your second year, you鈥檒l take increasing amounts of responsibility for your own caseloads.

Independent study

In addition to your scheduled contact hours, you will be expected to undertake guided independent study.

The School hosts an extensive clinical assessment library, and a master鈥檚 common room.

Placements

Undertake weekly clinical placements during term time. There are also short block placements within term time and during the holidays.

Over the two-year course, you'll spend around 600 hours in different clinical settings. Settings include schools, hospitals, community clinics, and the private and voluntary sectors.
