At Reading we offer you the opportunity to learn languages the flexible way, with a wide range of languages to study on their own, or in combination, on our BA Modern Languages course.

Alternatively, our modern languages joint degrees allow you to combine your language studies with another discipline, from one of our impressive selection of partner subjects.

Our Courses

BA Modern Languages

Follow your passion for languages and make the most of your time at university by developing a programme of studies perfectly tailored to your strengths in this highly flexible degree.

On this course you will be able to study one, two or three languages in combination. Our four core languages – French, German, Italian and Spanish – can be studied on their own, combined with each other, or with one of our additional languages – Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Modern Greek and Russian.

We offer all our core languages from beginner’s, intermediate and advanced levels – and with our accelerated language-learning modules, you can achieve a high-level of proficiency by the time you graduate.

You can pick up new languages through our additional languages, which are offered from beginner’s level, and carry them forward through your degree. Additional languages are offered as a less intensive pathway and allow you to reach intermediate level by the end of your course.

We offer a broad choice of research-led culture modules that develop your understanding of the cultures of the countries in which our four core languages are spoken, from their literary, artistic and cinematic traditions to their history and politics. These can be complemented with our comparative modules covering subjects such as translation studies, global literatures and film, as well as contemporary issues including migration, conflict studies and linguistics.

“I was immediately able to tailor my degree for my specific interests, as there is a wide range of modules available.”

Joint courses

We offer an excellent selection of joint courses. Maximise your time at university and boost your career prospects by combining your language studies with another subject.

Our joint courses allow you to study two separate subjects in detail and gain a full qualification in each.

Studying two subjects adds breadth to your knowledge base, enables you to meet a wider range of other students and equips you with skills from two different disciplines. You will also develop a broader range of transferable skills. Students who take joint courses degrees can demonstrate a range of competencies and abilities in a number of areas.

Complement your language studies in French, German, Italian or Spanish with a subject from our diverse range of disciplines.
