We want to use our enthusiasm and passion for modern languages to inspire the next generation of linguists.
As a Department we carry out a number of outreach activities throughout the academic year for both school pupils and teachers, from year 12 taster days to teacher events.
Twice a year the Department holds taster days for current year 12 students interested in studying modern languages at university.

The Department organises an annual Teach Meet for those teaching languages at secondary schools.
These normally take place after the school day has finished. Recently discussed topics include the individual research project on the UK A level curriculum, using digital resources in teaching, and how to encourage students to go beyond the curriculum.

The Reading Scholars programme aims to give year 12 students a real taste of life as a university undergraduate, and to provide practical support as participants begin their higher education application process. For more information, please visit the Reading Scholars page.
While we cannot always travel to your school, we are happy to give digital talks on topics such as "Why study languages at university?", "What is a year abroad?" or "What can you do with a languages degree?". For more information, please email us on languages@reading.ac.uk.
Each year, close to Armistice day, we hold a public lecture focusing on aspects of the First World War. From the battles of 1916 in literature to Reading in the Great War and the 1919 Peace Treaty, we explore the causes, experiences and consequences of the Great War.
