If you've previously completed a degree with us, you’ll automatically receive our alumni discount (£1,500 off the cost of your tuition fees).

PhD funding

The University allocates around 150 entry awards each year in PhD studentships and bursaries, so there are many ways to access PhD funding. A studentship is usually a package that provides full funding for tuition fees and living costs.

Funding for geography and environmental science PhDs

NERC Climate System and Biodiversity Science CROCUS Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA)

Funded PhD opportunities training a new generation of environmental scientists to become interdisciplinary experts with strong quantitative skills, creative thinkers, and leaders in sustainability and inclusivity. Such knowledge and skills are critical in delivering the ambitious Net Zero, adaptation and restoration plans adopted by governments and businesses worldwide. 

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South East Doctoral Training ARC (SEDarc) Doctoral Training Partnership

Applicants for topics in Geography and Environmental Studies are invited to apply for the PhD studentship opportunities offered through the ESRC South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc) Doctoral Training Partnership. These studentships are 3.5 years in duration and cover tuition fees, an annual maintenance grant as well as additional funding for research training and support. Find out more about ESRC SEDarc studentships

The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼ is delighted to offer a scheme aimed at supporting local residents to achieve their highest academic potential, as well as enhancing their professional prospects.

Our regional PhD bursaries are designed to give candidates within the region the chance to benefit from the all-round training on offer to our doctoral researchers. 

Rob Potter Memorial Travel Award For Overseas Fieldwork

The School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science offers a bursary of up to £1,000 per year to support a doctoral student with their fieldwork, in honour of Professor Rob Potter. 

The University's Doctoral and Researcher College holds information about studentships and other funding available for postgraduate study. Studentships are available for both UK and international students.
