Areas of interest

I am interested in sustainable farming, and in win-wins for biodiversity and production in particular. I like conducting manipulative ecological experiments, embedding people into field studies (e.g. via participatory research), and am especially fascinated by the weirdness of invertebrates.

My current research focuses on co-designing biodiversity interventions with arable farmers in the UK, and I have conducted cover crop and agroforestry experiments. I am particularly interested in silvoarable farming, and its potential to provide resilience to climate change. I have worked in several other systems too, including oil palm agriculture, cassava agriculture, and tropical rainforest.

In my previous role as an evidence synthesist, I conducted a case study for dynamic meta-analysis, which increases user access to relevant evidence via an interactive database. This sparked an interest in data management practices, and I designed an author-level metric (the data-index) to promote data sharing, a reporting checklist (AgroEcoList) to improve reporting standards, and two ontologies (AgriOntologies) to improve data interoperability in agricultural research.
