It is the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼'s Winter Vacation period from 21st December 2024 until 19th January 2025. The University is closed between 21st December 2024 and 5th January 2025. 

If you're in Reading during this time, there are plenty of community-based events for you to take part in!

Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) are colleagues at Matuschek and Company, a general store in Budapest. Klara and Alfred dislike each other in person but love each other as pen pals (The film was remade in 1998 with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as ‘You Got Mail).

Set in the build up to Christmas the film explores love and loneliness and doesn’t shy away from the slightly darker side of the festive season.

This is a time to come together, make memories, and embrace the 'joy' of the season!

Everyone is welcome including members of the local community!

Activities will include Christmas craft such as making your own snow globes, decorating baubles, and creating heartfelt Christmas cards. 

You can even try making a gingerbread house! A Christmas movie will also be screened and you can vote for your favourite Christmas movie or to watch one you haven't seen before!

English Conversation Cafés (In-Person and Online)

No matter what stage you’re at on your English-learning journey, or if you're a proficient speaker already, the English Conversation Cafés offer a safe space to practice and build confidence in speaking English, an opportunity to voluntarily help and support others, a chance to learn about other cultural perspectives, and a place to meet new people and make new friends!

EVERYONE is welcome! They are FREE to attend. They take place every 2 weeks throughout both semesters and more regularly during the Summer Vacation period. See the timetable for all dates.  

Reading-based students can use their participation in the cafés as evidence towards one of the RED Awards.

Zap Comedy is a comedy group of people with learning disabilities who put on variety shows, comedy magic shows and sketch shows throughout the year.

Their annual panto is the best thing about Christmas. Also includes festive disco.

'Festive' Friday Get-Togethers (for International Students) including a FESTIVE QUIZ!

These informal 'Get-Togethers' take place every 2 weeks during Semesters 1 and 2. Drop-in and take part in a variety of different activities and meet new people!

The first hour (14:00-15:00) of this Get-Together will include a fun quiz about Christmas! No knowledge about Christmas required and groups will be made on the day! Winners and runners-up of the quiz will win a prize! 

It’s a chance for you to socialise and do something completely different from your studies at the end of the week to help you relax and unwind before the weekend and get excited and ready for the winter break!

Drawing together artefacts collected by the people of Reading with the Museum's own historic world objects, this small display exlpores how the local Indian community express themselves through dance.

Discover the symbolism of these dances and their importance for religious festivals and occasions.

As part of Black History Month join us for an African Drumming Workshop with on Wednesday 23rd October.

Join Limpopo Groove CIC for a fun interactive drumming workshop where you'll learn about African drum and culture. These sessions primarily involve playing the African drum (Ngoma/Ingoma) - a large goblet originating from Zimbabwe covered in goat skin and played with bare hands.

No experience is needed to take part, so come along to meet new people and a new skill. Drumming workshops aim to improve wellbeing and the benefits of playing the drums are endless, and can help with anxiety, depression, and social resilience. We believe best part of the class is getting together with others and enjoying each other's company.

Open to all ages - children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

No matter what stage you’re at on your English-learning journey, or if you're a proficient speaker already, the English Conversation Cafés offer a safe space to practice and build confidence in speaking English, an opportunity to voluntarily help and support others, a chance to learn about other cultural perspectives, and a place to meet new people and make new friends!

EVERYONE is welcome! They are FREE to attend. They take place every 2 weeks throughout both semesters and more regularly during the Summer Vacation period. See the timetable for all dates.  

Reading-based students can use their participation in the cafés as evidence towards one of the RED Awards.

These informal 'Get-Togethers' take place every 2 weeks during Semesters 1 and 2. Drop-in and take part in a variety of different activities and meet new people!

It’s a chance for you to socialise and do something completely different from your studies at the end of the week to help you relax and unwind before the weekend.

Activities include, but aren’t limited to, crafting, origami, mindfulness colouring, Zine-making, quizzing and board gaming.

EXHIBITION: BLACK EXPERIENCES - RECLAIMING NARRATIVES WITH NO MORE TABLE TALK

As part of Black History Month Reading's BAME+ Allies Network is hosting a FREE accessible exhibition which focuses on amplifying Black voices and experiences.

Come along to view the artwork created by Black and BAME participants. Artistic spaces and environments can often serve as a catalyst for dialogue and understanding, bringing individuals together to appreciate different perspectives and tackle difficult subjects in a safe space.

We hope this exhibition enriches community understanding by fostering creativity, cultural exchange, and social inclusivity.

Your Disabled Students' Get Together is led by your Disabled Students' Part-Time Officer Peter. This is a space for Disabled students to network and connect, share any thoughts or concerns you have about starting University, meet your PTO, and get to know what we do at Reading Students' Union.

Reading Students’ Union defines a disabled student as anyone who self-defines as disabled; they may be affected by a condition, which has a substantial long-term impact on their ability to carry out day-to-day activities. This definition encompasses hidden and physical impairments and mental health issues.

We also recognise students who identify as neurodivergent instead of/as well as disabled. Reading Students’ Union defines a neurodivergent student as someone who has a neurological condition. This includes but is not limited to, ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. Reading Students’ Union understands that accommodations may be needed by some students and therefore is a hidden disability.

This definition includes undergraduate students who self-define as having been financially independent for three years prior to the start date of their undergraduate course, students with caregiving responsibilities and students who are care leavers, as mature students.

Reading Students’ Union defines a trans student as a student who does not identify with their gender assigned at birth, this includes students who identify as trans men, trans women, trans non-binary, non-binary, and other genderqueer identities.

We also recognise that some non-binary students identify with being trans too. Reading Students’ Union defines a non-binary student as someone whose gender identity is not simply male or female. Other terms which may be used can include people who identify as genderqueer, gender fluid, agender, bigender and more. These terms do not all mean the same thing but all help describe the experience of people who do not identify as simply male or female.
