Delivered by FutureLearn, our online courses offer the opportunity to get a taste of what studying an archaeology degree is like, or to just enjoy learning more about this fascinating subject.

From dig to lab and beyond

Get an introduction to studying archaeology, exploring exciting discoveries in the Vale of Pewsey, near Stonehenge and Avebury. You'll chart the progress of an archaeological excavation from dig to lab and beyond.

An excavation is more than just digging with a trowel. You'll investigate how and where to dig, collect, record and store precious finds and take a closer look at what you can learn from a discovery once you've found it.

One of the most intriguing finds of all is a burial site and you'll examine the archaeological methods employed in the study of the dead. How can you recreate the life, health and occupation of an individual just from their skeletal remains?

Dead Interesting: Uncovering Roman Britain in Old Museum Collections

Be amongst the first to study 2,000 year old cremated remains from Roman Britain and learn about the origins of the people of Colchester, its first capital.

This course will give you an introduction to osteoarchaeology, the methods, techniques and theory used to study ancient bones. Using evidence gathered by experts, you'll create a fact file about the age, sex, health, status, and origins of the individual.

You'll also identify other sources of information such as inscriptions and grave goods to build your knowledge of the people of Roman Colchester, including their cultural identity and migration patterns.
