Students from every discipline and year, including postgraduates, are welcome to study our 20-credit language modules. Even if you don’t have the credits available to take one of our modules, there is still an option to take our modules non-credit for a small fee.

Attendance is paramount for successful language learning, so, regrettably, we may have to turn down applicants with unavoidable timetable clashes.

Note: IWLP modules are only available to those currently studying or working at the University. We do not have provision for the general public.

Credit students

New students arriving for their first year who are permitted and wish to take an Institution-Wide Language Programme (IWLP) module for credit, starting in Semester 1, must contact the module selection team at moduleselection@reading.ac.uk.  Please ensure that you use your university email account, providing the module code and title you would like to take. If you are unable to take an IWLP module for credit, you can still take the module non-credit - please see below.

Current students who want to take an IWLP module for credit in the following academic year need to sign up via RISIS module selection. IWLP modules will be listed as LA1XX + the letter of the language. If you have any prior knowledge of the language, you must complete a placement test so that you can be placed in the right class. The placement tests are on the individual language pages.

If the online module selection window has closed, contact us ASAP at iwlp@reading.ac.uk and we can advise further. If you are unable to take an IWLP module for credit, you can still take the module non-credit - please see below.

Note: doctoral students cannot take an IWLP module as a credit module.

Non-credit students

If you have no optional credits available, you can still take our modules alongside your credit modules for a small fee, just like taking a language course. You attend the same classes as credit students and can receive a certificate after completion of the module. Visit the webpage for the language you wish to study and complete the non-credit online application form. If you have any prior knowledge of the language, you must also complete the placement test, which can be found on the individual language pages.

Note: non-credit applications open at the beginning of September.

Non-credit fee

There is no fee for IWLP modules if you are a current undergraduate or postgraduate-taught student taking the module as part of your 120 or 180 credits for the year.

For non-credit students, the fee for the academic year 2024/25 is £364 for the whole module. This will be billed to your student account in Semester 1.

Exceptions:

  • Doctoral students: all doctoral students are required to pay for their IWLP module; however, if your School or Department is willing to fund your IWLP module, get the PGR Agreement Form signed by your School Director of Teaching and Learning and email it to iwlp@reading.ac.uk. Those not being funded will be charged to their student account in Semester 1.
  • Staff: all staff are required to pay for their IWLP module; however, if your School or Department is willing to fund your module, please complete the IWLP Staff Agreement Form and email it to iwlp@reading.ac.uk. Those not being funded will be invoiced in Semester 1 and will pay via the Finance department.

Withdrawals

We hope you will enjoy your IWLP module. If, however, there is a reason you need to withdraw, you will need to complete the IWLP Withdrawal Form and email it to iwlp@reading.ac.uk. We cannot remove you from our records until we have received this form, even if you have told your home department or your academic tutor.

If you are taking your IWLP module non-credit, you can withdraw before Friday of week four in Semester 1. For any non-credit withdrawal after this date, you will need to pay the full fee amount.
