Developing vital skills at Reading
Connie immersed herself fully in her studies while at Reading, taking advantage of both the theoretical and practical aspects her modules had to offer.
“The course at Reading was wonderful – it focused on history, theory and practice.”
Connie's confidence grew during her degree as she studied and formed her unique interests. Letterpress was one of her favourite modules.
“Working closely with the delightful Geoff Wyeth made me go ‘OOOHH! This is what I want to build my work and design practice from’. I loved being in that workshop so much. I even got an Examiner's Award for my efforts. I’m working freelance right now, but I know that my ultimate goal is to be a mini-Geoff. I wouldn’t have figured that out without uni.
"I think the whole point of university is to become more confident in what you are able to achieve. And I believe this was my experience. I still get dips of imposter syndrome now and then, but if I didn’t I wouldn’t be human.”
Supportive environment
Unfortunately, one of Connie's parents passed away during her first year at Reading. She is grateful to the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication for the unwavering support she received during this difficult period.
“The Department were very accommodating and incredibly supportive.”
Connie is particularly thankful for the continuing support and guidance she received during her final year, and she credits her tutors with mentoring her through her dissertation.
“I always knew their office door was open and they were there for me if I needed them.”
Exciting study abroad experience
Having the opportunity to study abroad is unquestionably an exciting time in a student’s life. Connie thrived during her study abroad experience in Ravensburg, Germany, as she gained new skills which she still incorporates in her design practice today.
“Studying abroad opened up new opportunities for me to study something completely different. The course in Ravensburg focussed on video production and design. I learned lots of new skills which I still incorporate into my design practice today.”
Utilising Reading’s careers support and becoming a graphic designer
Since graduating from Reading, Connie secured an internship through the University’s Careers team with and spent four weeks working with the Reading-based communications agency. Following her internship, Connie has been working as an artist and graphic designer for , a Hampshire-based company who support young artists to kick-start their career.
Reflecting on her own time at Reading and thinking about recent graduates, Connie believes that an education in design is important for building a portfolio and developing your talents and creativity as an artist and designer.
“I wouldn’t have had the knowledge or the confidence to do what I’ve done for Inquisitive Type or Blossom & Easel without my degree behind me.
Follow all your interests even if you don’t know where they are going to lead, and don’t worry too much about what other people think.”
