Costing a proposal

The section provides guidance and advice on how best to cost a proposal. The following pages will provide information on how to estimate the time spent over the life of a project, what to include as part of the Full Economic Costing, as well as the pricing policies. For the completion of accurate staff costings, please contact your Research Development Manager as early as possible.

Costing your proposal

When costing your proposal you should take into account the time it will involve, including project management time, supervision of research assistants, time spent preparing and presenting conference papers, writing project reports and papers.

Full Economic Costing (FEC)

The full economic cost of a project needs to be calculated to establish the full cost to the University of undertaking the activity and research. The FEC includes all direct and indirect costs such as depreciation, space, central services and a contribution to investment in the University's infrastructure.

The pricing policy will vary depending on the sponsor and their stated policies. The page here includes information for the pricing of research as well as studentships.
