Overview
Module aims and purpose
The module develops ideas about design careers, alongside building creative professional practice in the studio. You will learn about applying for design jobs, and get input into your portfolio and CV. The module also encompasses the common industry practice of design contests, and tutors will work with you to develop your entries. Finally, there is a focus on how printed objects are produced, both in an industrial setting, and in a studio crafting environment.聽
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:聽
- Organise visual content: Create effective and engaging design solutions by demonstrating an understanding of how people process and react to graphic and typographic content.聽
- Employ technologies appropriately: Select and harness traditional, current and emerging technologies and crafts.聽聽聽
- Prepare for professional contexts: Alone, in teams or with clients, work and communicate effectively across a range of configurations and environments.聽
Module content
The module contains distinct strands to support different areas of career development.聽
- A guest lecture series provides the basis for reflective writing about industry and personal aspirations聽
- An intensive careers workshop to allow focus on CV, portfolios and personal goal.聽
- Opportunities to engage with the University Careers team聽
- Practical project linked to a design contest聽
- Learning about a range of professional printing and making technologies, and how they can be simulated in a design studio.聽
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
The module will be delivered through a series of workshops, guest lectures, online content and in-person check-in sessions. Classes may involve group work, some of which may be assessed.聽
Study hours
At least 60 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
Assessments with numerical marks
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
- the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
- where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
Assessments marked Pass/Fail
- where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Formative assessment
Formative assessment is any task or activity which creates feedback (or feedforward) for you about your learning, but which does not contribute towards your overall module mark.
Formative assessment will usually fall into two categories:
- Tasks and feedback that link directly to final assessment, allowing you to build relevant skills and measure your progress towards assessed work.
- Tasks and feedback that feed into wider learning around the topic being covered. The skills and insights you acquire should help you achieve well in assessed tasks, but application of this leaning may be interpreted, rather than simply repeated.
Formative feedback will often include:
- Verbal feedback in class.
- Written comments on a piece of work.
- Self, peer of staff assessment against a mark scheme.
