Overview

Module aims and purpose

The aim of this ‘capstone’ module is to integrate and apply both core and specialised knowledge obtained in the MSc Real Estate or MSc Real Estate Finance Programmes and to demonstrate originality in the understanding and systematic application of this knowledge. Students work as part of team to complete three group assignments related to an International Field Trip, an Industry Challenge and a Real Estate Strategy Game. The module has a strong emphasis on ‘experiential’ learning.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a systematic understanding of the issues that need to be resolved in order to manage a problem and; deal with complex ‘real world’ property market issues both systematically and creatively and to make sound judgements in the absence of complete data;
  • critically evaluate land and property issues in their wider economic, social, political and legal context;
  • demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems and act as part of a team in planning and implementing tasks, .incluiding the collection and evaluation of relevant information sets;
  • demonstrate enhanced qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment, in particular through group learning . data analytics, case-based research, report writing, negotiation and the effective communication of conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Module content

The module has three distinct elements:

  • A six-day International field trip to a case study market including a structured programme of lectures, presentations and project visits in the case study city, a structured professional project brief resulting in a group professional investment pitch and presentation.
  • An industry challenge where teams of students are assigned a task by an industry partner. The assessed output involves both a professional presentation to the industry partner, and report.
  • A four day integrated group strategy game.
