Overview

Module aims and purpose

Aims: for students to independently manage clients with speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders across the life span in a safe, holistic and culturally appropriate manner demonstrating achievement of clinical competencies required for entry to the profession; to develop skills in clinical reasoning and critical evaluation to enable flexible reflective practice with ability to identify and determine own CPD. To develop leadership, resilience and time management skills to commence their first post effectively. The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the changing knowledge base and modes of delivery in the context of health and education and prepare them for their lifelong career learning within the NHS, Education, private, voluntary or independent sectors.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Evidence clinical and professional skills and competencies adhering to RCSLT standards and HCPC standards of proficiency and Conduct Performance and Ethics at a graduate level;
  2. Assess the nature of a range of communication/swallowing disorders in adult and paediatric clients, differentially diagnose and design holistic individualised management plans, demonstrating an understanding of the need to adapt practice to ensure inclusive, culturally sensitive and non discriminatory practise with the client at the centre of the process;
  3. Evidence flexibility in the delivery of management such that practise is adapted to meet the needs of different groups and individuals and evaluate the effectiveness of this therapy within the client鈥檚 social and communicative environment;
  4. Practice independently as a professional within the context of multidisciplinary team; evidence flexible and critically reflective practice, evidencing an awareness of their own CPD; manage autonomously a client's clinical need demonstrating evidence based clinical reasoning via appraisal and critical evaluation and
  5. Consistently evidence context sensitive professional written and spoken communications to service users, their relatives and carers, colleagues and others; across a range of settings.

Module content

Clinical practice: the students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of clinical practice opportunities (simulation, clinical reasoning and clinical placement(s)), targeted to their clinical profile and will be increasingly responsible for independently assessing, diagnosing and treating a range of clients with communication/EDS conditions in an inclusive and increasing flexible manner with support from their practice educators. Average hours will vary across terms.

Students will also attend linguistic assessment clinic sessions to enable application of linguistics to specific clients.

Lectures: To develop leadership, resilience and time/caseload management skills. Students critically consider current issues within professional practice for Speech and Language Therapy within Health and Education contexts in preparation for professional life. Clinical reasoning and critical reflective practice are addressed throughout. Careers preparation for first post is addressed. Students attend interprofessional learning sessions.

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

The module comprises a varied approach to teaching and learning, utilising, seminars, small group teaching, online resources, clinical placements, advanced clinical practice seminars with a focus on case based learning.

Study hours

At least 46 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Requirements for a pass

Students need to achieve all of the following to pass this module:

  1. A pass in the supervisor assessments
  2. A mark of 50% in all other assessments
  3. An overall module mark of 50%

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

Assessments with numerical marks

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
  • the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
  • where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessments marked Pass/Fail

  • where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Formative assessment

Formative assessment is any task or activity which creates feedback (or feedforward) for you about your learning, but which does not contribute towards your overall module mark.

Ongoing formative feedback within clinical placements on a weekly basis. Feedback during clinical reasoning sessions, both peer and staff feedback, Presentation of topics in small groups - peer marked and peer feedback and engagement in writing personal statements and interviewing skills.
