Overview

Module aims and purpose

The investment portfolio management module covers key topics and techniques in relation to constructing and maintaining an optimal investment portfolio. The teaching approaches all topics from both academic and market, practical perspectives.聽

The module builds on the investment management foundation that has been introduced in the ICM401 Investments module. The module aims to provide students with the ability:聽

  • To explain the issues facing the investment management industry,聽
  • To recognise the challenges, investment managers face, when constructing and maintaining an optimal investment portfolio,聽
  • To describe the importance of portfolio diversification, performance evaluation, risk management and portfolio rebalancing.聽

The module will also introduce students to the world of alternative investments, the hedge fund industry, in particular.聽

The module is ideal for students that want to pursue a career in investment management as on top of rigorous academic teaching it provides practical individual and group projects where students will gain hands-on experience in constructing and managing a realistic investment portfolio.聽

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:聽

  • Describe the various stages of the investment portfolio management process,聽
  • Explain the various investment styles i.e., active, passive, smart beta, and the rationale for them,聽
  • Allocate funds between assets, taking into account the investor鈥檚 risk-return preferences,聽
  • Evaluate portfolio performance, compute and understand standard measures of portfolio risk-adjusted performance.聽

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

  • Formal lectures, in which students are strongly encouraged to ask questions,聽
  • Workshops, guiding students in solving a practical investment portfolio management task as a team,聽
  • Seminars, in which students are encouraged to develop their analytical skills,聽
  • Face-to-face/Online availability for student consultation.聽

Study hours

At least 34 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

Assessments with numerical marks

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
  • the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
  • where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessments marked Pass/Fail

  • where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
