Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module gives students the opportunity to pursue a work placement with an external organisation broadly related to the general sphere of their degree studies. The aim of the module is to allow participants to gain work experience in a career path of interest, develop a wide range of employability skills, build their network and enhance market awareness. The maximum duration of the placement is 3 months and it takes place during the summer period (June-September). Placements should be secured by students independently. The Centre’s career development office can support students in their search and application process. Placements secured by students are subject to the approval of the module convenor. The module is assessed by a 3,000-word project based on the work experience gained.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to: 

  1. Apply and enhance the knowledge and skills gained in their academic studies 
  2. Develop a wide range of employability skills including communication skills, networking skills and team-working ability. 
  3. Apply independent research skills to the work experience undertaken 
  4. Reflect and critically evaluate the broader significance of the work undertaken for the placement in conjunction with the practical knowledge acquired on the placement

Module content

Because this is a placement module, it is based on students’ own preparation required in advance of the placement and on the associated project following the placement. Students will, however, receive supervision from a faculty member, who can provide advice on how students can turn their placement experience into an appropriate report.

Teaching and learning methods

Within this module, the onus is on independent working, including work experience, learning by observation, training, as well as applying these experiences specifically to an applied project.  

  • The module convenor must give approval for the company, placement activity planned and the project work that will arise out of it. 
  • An academic supervisor will be agreed, who may be someone other than the module convenor 
  • The academic supervisor will discuss and agree with the student the level of commitment to the organisation required by the student. 

Study hours

This module is a placement or study abroad module and therefore the teaching and learning activities will predominantly, or entirely, take place away from the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼. Your host organisation will normally advise you of the associated hours of your placement or year abroad. If the module includes any in-person activities at the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼, these will be confirmed to you before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

Assessments with numerical marks

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
  • the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
  • where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessments marked Pass/Fail

  • where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
