Overview

Module aims and purpose

The module will investigate the impact that US foreign policy had on the development of a modern American state and society since the Spanish-American war of 1898. Additionally, the module aims to encourage the development of oral communication skills and the student鈥檚 effectiveness in group situations and team-working. Students will also develop their IT skills by use of relevant web resources and databases, where appropriate.聽

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Have a detailed knowledge of the events through extensive reading in specialised literature;
  2. Appraise critically the primary sources and historical interpretations of the subject;
  3. Organise material and articulate arguments effectively in writing; and
  4. Have developed their oral communication skills.

Module content

The module will investigate the impact that American foreign policy has had on the development of a modern American state and society in the hundred years since the adoption by the USA of a significant world role in the 1890s. The impact of domestic affairs on the nature of America鈥檚 relationship with the wider world is also examined. The unit introduces students to the idea that a study of international relations has a broad social dimension as well as a political one, in terms of the ways in which social groups understand and respond to other nations in a domestic American context. Topics will include the impact of war on American society, American views of Bolshevism, the idea of an American empire, defining isolationism with reference to social trends such as immigration, the legacy of Vietnam, and the nationalism of the 1980s.聽

  • the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;

  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

The University policy statement on penalties for late submission can be found at: /cqsd/-/media/project/functions/cqsd/documents/qap/penaltiesforlatesubmission.pdf
