Overview
Module aims and purpose
In this module you will gain real world experiences developed through intensive investigation into an organisation, museum or gallery, or during a work placement, in consultation and with the support of a supervisor.Â
The module aims to foster your ability to engage as an active and responsible learner, enabling you to manage your own work schedule and organisational talent, and allows you to nourish and apply your independence and self-motivation.Â
You will have opportunities to develop competency in independent learning, allowing you to identify your strengths, what support you need to succeed, and where your specific interests lie. Â
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:Â
- Articulate and substantiate your point of view, evaluating evidence and using reasoned argumentsÂ
- Manage your own work schedule, and integrate independence and self-motivationÂ
- Reflect your real-world experiences investigating a site on study abroad or on your work placementÂ
- Use visual material effectively as evidence and illustration in written argument.Â
Module content
Students are introduced to work opportunities and access to placements through seminars at the start of the semesters, indicating sites to find placements or job opportunities.Â
Independent study is supported through 1-2-1 tutorials and feedback sessions.Â
Live Alumni Talks and extensive recordings from previous years further give background to experiences and provide advice and guidance.Â
Students’ Real World experiences are captured through journals.Â
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
Collaboration: Online drop-in sessions encourage peer learning through group discussion. Project based learning on placement developmentÂ
Acquisition: Alumni Talks online and recorded. Talis ListÂ
Practice: Experiential learning through study abroad and work experience.Â
Inquiry: Researching and building a context and developing own tools to gain knowledge for individual experiences.Â
Reflection: Developing authentic learning from real world experiences, reflect through formative draft, Feed forward, providing grounding for professional practice. Â
This module is delivered through blended learning using online technologies such as Blackboard Collaborate or Teams and video capture. Â
Resources and recordings are made available at the beginning of the module.Â
Assessment points, briefs and deadlines are introduced at the start of the module.Â
Formative and summative assessments are authentic and are excellent applications of professional practice.Â
Formative is through written feedback to a draft submission.Â
Summative assessment in semester 2 through coursework.Â

Students need to achieve an overall module mark of 40% to pass this module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
Assessments with numerical marks
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
- the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
- where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
Assessments marked Pass/Fail
- where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
