Overview
Module aims and purpose
This module will examine the Arts and their educational potential via a range of applications and contexts. Students will develop an understanding of creativity and its individual/societal impact derived from a variety of ‘real world’ contexts. During the module students will engage with a range of projects via visits, Visiting Lecturers and/or individual/group practical activities. Critical thinking will be developed through the analysis of case studies of arts-based projects and students will be encouraged to reflect on both the design and use of the Arts and the development of creativity in relation to issues within educational studies.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Develop a range of skills in accessing and assessing material and information from a range of sources relating to the academic study of creative learning and art projects.
- Develop skills in examining and evaluating a range of arts projects to articulate and justify an informed point of view.
- Draw reflectively and critically upon their own educational experiences and literature about the nature of creative learning.
- Design and reflect upon their own ideas for an Arts-based project.
Module content
Based on the premise that creativity can only really be understood in context, this module develops upon theoretical underpinnings of the Part 1 module: Creative Learning in the Arts. The module engages students with ‘real world’ applications of creative learning through the Arts. It will encourage students to explore learning and analyse creativity within specific contexts of interest, i.e. arts-driven/led projects in a range of different educational and social settings. Students will examine the theory, knowledge and skills involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of various discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary projects and consider the efficacy and impact of creative learning through the Arts. Finally, students will also engage with discourses around concepts of participation and change – individual, social, lasting and (un)desired. This will also include critiquing the ethics involved in Creative Learning through the Arts.
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
Largely a blend of lectures and seminars, there may be some practical sessions or part-sessions in which practical applications of the Arts are more effectively understood through ‘doing’. There will be some asynchronous learning materials – film footage, reading, screencasts – which will be discussed within sessions.
It is hoped that there will be an organised visit to witness an Arts-based project in a real-world context. This will depend upon scheduling and availability.
Study hours
At least 18 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
Assessments with numerical marks
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
- the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
- where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
Assessments marked Pass/Fail
- where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Formative assessment
Formative assessment is any task or activity which creates feedback (or feedforward) for you about your learning, but which does not contribute towards your overall module mark.
Brief informal presentation (two minutes) for structured peer feedback on an essay plan for the summative essay. This will not be to the whole cohort. The essay plan will also be submitted for brief, structured written tutor feedback.
