Overview

Module aims and purpose

ONLY AVAILABLE ON THE AHEP PROGRAMME.Ìý

To provide students with an opportunity to undertake either a dissertation or a work-based research project enabling them to analyse critically and in depth a specific topic, chosen by students, within the realm of their studies on Leadership Organisations and Behaviour; to display the ability to carry out primary and secondary research.Ìý

The aims of the dissertation or work-based project are to:Ìý

• develop students’ capacity for independent research, engagement with core literature, self-reflection and critical analysis.Ìý

• deepen their knowledge of a specialised topic within their programme of study.Ìý

• understand how to collect primary or secondary data and to critically analyse these.Ìý

• interpret, evaluate, discuss and conclude the findings consistently with the literature or problem selected.Ìý

Module learning outcomes

1. formulating a relevant, coherent and clearly defined research project.Ìý

2. drawing on their knowledge of research methods, appropriate to projects in Leadership Organisations and Behaviour, to analyse complex issues in a critical fashion.Ìý

3. generating sources of information and ideas.

5. providing a systematic and carefully structured analysis of the information collected.

6. interpreting, discussing and drawing of relevant conclusions from the analysis and relating these to the existing literatureÌý

Additional Outcomes:

Students will develop the ability to research on their own initiative and learn to organise their work on a longer-term project within a tight schedule. The research project will also offer the ability to demonstrate originality in the chosen research sphere.Ìý

Module content

A supervised, though largely independent problem-based research project of 8,000-10,000 words on a leadership or organisational behaviour-themed subject, preferably arising out of the student’s programme of study on the AHEP BSc programme or their professional role. In normal circumstances, the Negotiated Learning project will be completed over a period of circa 18 months from first contact with an allocated supervisor to the delivery of the finished project.Ìý

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

This is an independent research project. Student support will vary based on the needs of the individual, but the following is indicative of what a student might expect:Ìý

• Assess and give feedback on the student’s proposed research questionÌý

• Review a plan/skeleton and then one section up to the larger of 1,000 words or 10% of the final project length.Ìý

• Engage in virtual meetings (e.g., Teams) across the piece every 3-4 months on average.Ìý

• Respond to email queries within reason; with a guideline response within 72 hours during a Monday-Friday working week.Ìý

• Assessing the work as first marker.Ìý

Students will also have access to moderated chat rooms for peer-peer interaction and or posing and receiving general feedback from peers and moderators.Ìý

Study hours

At least 0 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

This module is subject to the Penalties for late submission for Postgraduate Flexible programmes policy, which can be found at:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties to work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark;Ìý
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
