Overview
Module aims and purpose
This module is specifically aimed at providing army officers with the capability to develop leadership in others.Ìý The role of leadership is complex and the emphasis is generally on developing the leadership in and of yourself.Ìý The interaction with others is essential for implementing change and gaining optimum performance.Ìý At the heart of this module is the fundamental belief that leaders are responsible not only for their own leadership development but for the development of leadership in those with whom they interact, whether that is through direct responsibility or through the power of influence.
This module aims to:Ìý
• Develop the capability of individuals to plan, manage and reflect on their individual personal leadership and consider how this can be used to support the leadership development of others.
• Encourage development of behavioural skills in individuals to increase the effectiveness and appropriateness of their capabilities and capacity.
• Recognise the importance of developing a broader leadership capability within the organisation.
• Recognise the importance of the leadership pipeline.
• Develop an awareness of the ethical, moral and practical issues in relation to developing leadership in others.
• Identify and manage dysfunctional behaviour and create positive leadership cultures.
• Harness more advanced coaching and mentoring techniques to achieve required behaviour change and outcomes.
• Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to foster effective followership among subordinates.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that programme members will be able to demonstrate:Ìý
1. Knowledge of a range of different theoretical models and approaches to learning and leadership development of others.Ìý
2. Knowledge of a range of different theoretical models and approaches to learning, leadership behaviour and transforming others.
3. Knowledge of a range of techniques for problem-solving, decision-making and managing feedback in the leadership development of others.
4. Develop a plan for the leadership development of another.
5. Critical analysis in order to engage others, assess the context and decide on the most appropriate leadership development interventions.
Additional outcomes
1. Self-reflection on how their support of the leadership development of others, impacts on their own leadership ability and influences internal and external stakeholders.
2. Recognize the traits of effective followership, such as initiative, critical thinking, and accountability, and apply strategies to cultivate these qualities in their team members.

Structure
Teaching and learning methods
The content is delivered on-line in a guided self-study format with directions to associated content, textbooks and journal articles. The module is structured around key readings and other sources, with a series of practical activities for each topic. An on-line tutor will support students as they work through the content. The on-line tutor will ensure students cover the key topics from the syllabus with a range of case material and exercises for group activity and facilitated on-line discussion both synchronous and asynchronous.Ìý

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties to work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark;Ìý
- where the piece of work is submitted more than one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
