Summary module description:

This module equips you for the marketplace as you build on your knowledge and skills in a real working environment and gain experiences which increase your employability.


Aims:

The module aims to:




  • Give students an insight into the operation of a company and the opportunity to relate their academic study to the workplace.

  • Make the student aware of the nature and purpose of an organisation and how the department to which they are attached relates to the rest of the organisation.

  • Contribute to the development of the student by providing responsibility commensurate with their level of knowledge, experience, potential, and degree of maturity.

  • Develop the student's interpersonal skills as well as their scientific knowledge and technical competence.

  • Develop reflective practices as a tool for deeper learning, for application in the marketplace.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:




  1. Critically evaluate and reflect upon their performance within an organisation

  2. Communicate the main elements of their placement to different audiences


Additional outcomes:

Each student's placement will be a unique experience, but for most students the outcome of the placement will, to a greater or lesser extent, develop the student's knowledge and understanding of:




  • Scientific and technical issues relevant to the company and their products and/or services

  • Economic and commercial considerations within the organisation


Outline content:

A 12-month placement within a Pharmacology-relevant company.听听


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Students will be treated as full time employees within the company and therefore receive any training in line with company policy.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

This module is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Each individual element of the coursework must be passed in order to pass the module.


Reassessment arrangements:

If the students does not pass the company report or tutor visit then an oral examination with the Director of Teaching and Learning and Head of Industrial Training will be undertaken to critically evaluate the skills acquired during the industrial placement(s).
