Summary module description:
This module will use a case-based learning approach to explore main developmental and acquired disorders associated with speech, language, communication and swallowing with a focus on the application of linguistic, phonetic, medical and psychological theory to clinical disorders.Ìý
Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an in depth introduction to a range of clinical populations across the lifespan with whom speech and language therapists work and key management approaches that are used with these client groups.

- Show a comprehensive understanding of the core features of speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan
- ÌýHave a critical awareness of the different models of treatmentÌý and management approaches for speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan
- Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the application of linguistics, medicine, phonetics and psychology theory to speech and language therapy practice.
- Evidence a practical understanding ofÌý established therapeutic techniques, and develop creative and originality in problem solving

Outline content:
This module will use a case-based learning approach to explore main developmental and acquired disorders associated with speech, language, communication and swallowing with a focus on the critical application of linguistic, phonetic, medical and psychological theory to clinical disorders.Ìý This will include the domains of speech, language, pragmatics, cognition and swallowing.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
PLMCI1R will use a blended approach to teaching, including face-to-face lectures, online resources, case based learning (CBL) and seminars.Ìý Lectures and online resources will be used to introduce theoretical material for CBL exercises. Independent and group study will focus on CBL exercises and seminars will be used for discussion of CBL cases.

This module will be assessed through two 1500 word case-based coursework assignments, each worth 50%.
Formative assessment methods:
Formative feedback will be provided on case based learning exercises that are consistent with the coursework assignments through peer feedback in group work and formative feedback from academic staff

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
50%.
Reassessment arrangements:
Resubmission of coursework in August resit period.
