Summary module description:

This module requires students to adopt qualitative and/or quantitative research techniques to investigate an organisational need/problem they identified in their research proposal in year two. Through a work-based project, students will apply learning from the year and from previous years, to gain a better understanding of their organisation, its context and its ability to embrace change effectively. Students are required to formulate and implement practical recommendations based on their investigation and to evaluate how this positively impacts on the organisation’s need/problem.


Aims:

The aim of the work-based project is to allow students to define and execute a piece of research on a need/problem in their organisation and to formulate and implement a change intervention to address the issue identified.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module the student will be able to:



1. Assemble a literature review on a given topic which provides a synthesis and critical analysis of the relevant literature



2. Design, justify and conduct an academic investigation of their chosen topic



3. Identify, analyse, and evaluate collected data



4. Apply key project outcomes, develop and implement plans and monitor and evaluateprogress,



5. Make conclusions and recommendations that impact the organisation positively



6. Reflect on their own and their organisation’s practice.



7. Present information clearly and in required format



8. Reflect on personal learning and how this might be applied in the future

Students should demonstrate how they have:



1. Ensured full engagement with all relevant stakeholders in a professional and inclusive manner.



2. Engaged with colleagues and stakeholders within their organisation and developed communications skills.

Outline content:

The module covers the following topics:



1. Composition of a literature review



2. Conducting research to create a robust argument supporting recommendations



3. Quantitative and qualitative data sources



4. Data analysis and writing-up research findings



5. Change intervention



6. Project management


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Students will be guided in their investigation via group supervision. They will also be required to prepare a reflective commentary on their personal learning and implications for future practice.

One 10,000-word individual assignment, to be submitted as per the submission schedule for the cohort.

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:



• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;



• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work
