Summary module description:
This module explores the field of intellectual property law.

Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the intellectual property system, with particular emphasis on the laws of copyright, patents, passing off, trade marks and breach of confidence; to identify and explore the rationales for intellectual property protection; and to enable students to assess their practical day to day implementation. Students should gain a broader conceptualisation of the interface between legal rules and physical realities.

By the end of the module, the student should be able to:
' Identify the main rationales for intellectual property law
' Demonstrate a good grasp of the dynamics of intellectual property law
' Analyze and evaluate the law

' Organize the material used into coherent arguments

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Teaching in this module involves a mix of lectures and interactive workshop sessions.



Students are expected to prepare for workshops, in which there is a group discussion of assigned questions.

One eight-hour online examination. Three questions toÌýbe answered from a selection of nine questions.ÌýÌýEach answer must not exceed 1,250 words.Ìý

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
