Summary module description:
The study of the decay of buildings.
Aims:
To provide the knowledge and understanding of the types of condition appraisal used for buildings and the primary causes of building decay through an examination of a variety of building defects. To provide students with basic skills for the assessment of building condition.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, it is expected that the student will be able to: • Distinguish between the types and purpose of various building surveys. • Distinguish the charateristics and materials between the different age categories of buildings. Understand how buildings age and fail. • Anticipate, recognise and identify the degradation of building materials, components and elements. • Distinguish between minor and serious building defects. • Synthesise the information gleaned from an inspection into performance advice. • Undertake a simple condition survey of a domestic building.

' examination of the types of condition appraisal and the primary causes of building decay;
' introduction, on an element by element basis, to a variety of defects;
' factors affecting the degree of decay and how failures can be identified and corrected;
' assessment of what defects might occur within the next 100 years

Penalties for late submission:
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
