Type of module:
Summary module description:
A seminar based module looking at weather and climate issues of both local and global importance.
Aims:
To encourage awareness of the current weather and recent world-wide climate events, the behaviour of recent weather and short-term (up to 5-day) forecasts through an informal meeting of the whole department (staff and students)
Assessable learning outcomes:
.
Additional outcomes:
Students gain an appreciation of the patterns of weather which occur both locally and elsewhere on the Earth and an understanding of the impacts of weather and climate in a wider (social and economic) context. Students are encouraged to develop their forecasting skills and develop an appreciation of the accuracy and limitations of current forecast products. This module reinforces many of the theoretical concepts learned elsewhere on the course.
Outline content:
All MSc students are expected to attend the weekly Weather and Climate discussions during all three terms. These are held jointly with the undergraduates and, using data from the UK Meteorological Office and the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the features of the week拢s weather and prospects for the following week are considered. In addition, meteorological and climatological subjects currently in the news are discussed and presentations from student practical classes are given. Normally, a Forecasting Game is held in conjunction with 'WCD' to forecast various aspects of European weather. Valuable prizes can be won and immeasurable prestige can be gained (and lost)!
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Short presentations and discussions on topics of current interest by staff and students. Briefing of the latest short and medium range weather forecasts.
