Summary module description:

This course is intended for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. It addresses the complex relations between innovation, IB and Economic Geography, by providing a state-of-the-art critical overview of conceptual and empirical research.Ìý


Aims:

The course aims at:Ìý





a.) providing the tools to critically assess some of the main conceptual and empirical issues in the literature on IB, Innovation and Economic GeographyÌý

b.) introducing to the application of some statistical methods for carrying out empirical analysis in this fieldÌý

c.) developing some practical skills, namely through preparing and making presentations, and being actively involved in a class discussion.Ìý

The course will cover a selection of topics related to IB, Innovation and Economic Geography, such as:?Ìý

3. MNEs, location and agglomerationÌý



4. The geography of innovative activitiesÌý



5. Internationalisation of R&D and location of MNEs’ innovative activitiesÌý

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The sessions will be a mixture of student presentations and formal lectures.Ìý

Student presentation will focus on research projects or papers in the area of IB, Innovation and Economic Geography. Each presentation will have both senior and junior discussant.

Participants will be assessed on the basis of aÌý5000 wordÌýessay.Ìý

Topic of the essay will be assigned at the end of the module. Written assessment can be submitted at any time up to 1 July of the academic year, and the assessment process will be completed within one month of submission.

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.Ìý

where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
