Summary module description:
This module focuses on the development of professional/transferable skills.
The Module lead at NUIST is Dr Raul Sanchez GalanÌý(raul.galan.13@alumni.ucl.ac.uk).
Aims:
To improve the students' professional skills (team-working, presentation skills, career management skills, technical skills, verbal and written communication, especially communication of mathematics).
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- Create and deliver oral presentations and written reports involving mathematical content;
- Use Latex and Microsoft Excel;
- Engage with and assimilate appropriate technical sources;
- Work effectively in teams;
- Assess their own career capabilities;
- Write (and be able to evaluate) an effective CV and LinkedIn Profile;
- Recognise, write and talk about their transferable skills.

Outline content:
The module will focus on the following areas and topics:
- Presentation skills;
- Communication of mathematical topics to others, both written and orally;
- Team-working;
- Giving constructive feedback;
- Careers management skills.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Career related assessment includes written and video assignments. Presentations are based on mathematical content suited for a more general audience. Written report is based on more technical mathematical content.
Formative assessment methods:
Penalties for late submission:
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 40% overall.
Reassessment arrangements:
Submission of two pieces of coursework in August / September: One careers assignment and one presentation.
