Summary module description:

This module provides English Language skills training and general study skills support for students on the MA in Education. The programme is run for both full time and part time students, offered as a combination of on campus and online options. It is designed as a core, non-credit bearing module so that there is no additional formal assessment at the end of each term. Students are expected to attend and a record of the module will be placed on student transcripts.


Aims:

The aims of this module are:Ìýmodule acts as a forum for all full time students to explore the educational approach and to develop their cultural awareness as well as strengthen their English language and study skills. For part timers it provides the forum to develop their study skills. It also provides a group venue for discussions about the programme in general.




  • To gain an understanding of the MA in Education Programme

  • To enhance level 7 study skillsÌýin including strategic thinking and study support

  • To practice and develop English language skills, and academic reading and writing

  • To provide a meeting place and discussion form for students on the MA in Education to gain an understanding of their developing academic literacies and help support their study

  • Introduction to the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼ and the MA in Education

  • PracticalÌýworkshops to improve academic literacies

  • Introduction to use of the library and study advice

  • Introduction to welfare and enrichment services at the University of Education

  • Understanding feedback and working with your Academic Tutor

  • Academic IntegrityÌý


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

This module will be delivered in interactive sessions, which include small group work and lecturing. Some Spring term sessions are designed to be delivered through blended learning. Sessions will require some pre-reading, and students should be prepared to contribute their views and work collaboratively in order to make the sessions interactive.

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

To pass the module attendance is required at all sessions, unless exemption has been granted for particular sessions or there is a valid, pre-agreed, reason for absence.
