Summary module description:
The module is an individual student project consisting of the undertaking of the design and cost management of a specified development project

Aims:
To give practical experience in the basic construction management techniques related to the current practice of construction cost management (quantity surveying).

Assessable learning outcomes:

For a specified proposed new building facility, the student will produce a project brief, an outline design, key aspect of detaildetailed design, report on design evaluation and a cost estimate. The student will also develop key documents expected from a quantity surveyor such as an elemental design cost.cost plan; a bill of quantities, life cycle cost analysis and advice on procurement options.Ìý

Students will be provided with aan outline design brief for a proposed building facility, or which,and working individually with tutorial guidance, the students will produce, amongst others:




  1. The detailed design brief

  2. The outline design

  3. An initial stage cost forecast.

  4. Detailed design of selected elements

  5. A Design Cost Plan An elemental cost planÌý

Students will undertake the project individually with tutorial guidance and brief lectures on key aspects.

STAGE A Interim Submission of project portfolio (Autumn term) – 10%



STAGE B Interim Submission of project portfolio (Spring term) – 20%



FINAL Submission of project portfolio (Spring term) – 70%

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
