Summary module description:
Explore the theory and practice of human motivation, self-control, and self-regulation, and examine these concepts in relation to consumer behaviour in a variety of settings. Drawing on perspectives from a variety of fields including psychology, marketing, and consumer research, identify practical ways in which motivation may be enhanced.
Aims:
To enable students to study topics relating to human motivation, and critically evaluate methods and applications of motivation theory in consumer marketing research.
Assessable learning outcomes:
At the end of this course students will:
- Understand and critically evaluate theories and models of human motivation
- Be equipped to create strategies to improve motivation in a variety of practical settings.

Outline content:
Sessions will be a mixture of lectures and interactive discussions. Key issues in motivation will be analysed in relation to consumer behaviour, drawing on a range of perspectives in psychology, marketing and consumer research.

Class exercises and discussions will provide the basis for formative assessment.

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 50% overall (weighted average of the coursework marks).
