Summary module description:
This moduleforms part of thePGDipLeadership(Senior Leader Apprenticeship) programme and,as such, sets out to provide the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by senior leaders in today’s world. The modulecoversthe foundations of leadership, givingabroad introductiontothe latestresearch,thinking andapplication ofleadership.It develops understanding of major conceptual approaches and emerging perspectives in the leadership area,providing a foundation for learning in subsequent modules. The moduleisdesigned to meet the learning outcomes of Apprenticeship Standard, specificallyincluding theoverall strategic direction of their area of responsibility,encouraging employees tounderstandthe organisation’s vision. This also covershowleaders might lead and respond to crisis managementand find solutions that meet the needs of stakeholders in aresponsible,ethicaland inclusiveway.

Develop an understanding in individuals aboutthefoundationsofleadership,inthe context oftoday’scomplexand challengingorganisationalenvironment
Develop the capability in individuals to engage with leadership practices based on relevant leadership thinking
Develop a critical and analytical approach to leadership thinking and practice
Encourageprogrammemembers to discover and apply leadership strategies, toolsandpractices from a variety of leadership perspectives
Developanawareness of theethics, diversityandinclusivityissues in relation to leadership

The module covers the following topics:
• Ahistorical timeline of leadership thinking and practice
• Conceptual underpinnings of leadership
• Major schools and perspectives of leadership
• Emerging perspectives of leadership
• Ethical anddiversityissues
•Application of leadership concepts to practice
Global context:
The module is taught with reference totheglobalcontextof the learners’organisationsandtheirexperiences.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Teaching and learning takes place through a blended learning approach. The teaching and learning methods comprise a combination of self-study via a range of online materials on the Canvas learning platform, face-to-face workshops with Faculty,andinteraction witha Learning Coachwho supports the cohort throughoutthe module.Eachpersonparticipates in afacilitatedAction Learning set of approximately6 -8 learnersin week 6 of themodule.
Materials on Canvas include content on-screen, videos, PowerPoint presentations, journal articles, book chapters,practicalactivitiesand reflection points.

One5,000 wordindividual assignment, to be submitted as per the submission schedule for the cohort.

Facilitated learningactivities are undertakenduring the module,includingformative feedbackonthe assignment.

These are in accordance with the mode of study arrangements laid out in the programme specifications.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
Formative assessment is either a “Proceed” or “Revise”, and emphasis is placed on providing feedback.

Reassessment by 100% assignment, capped at 50%.
