Summary module description:
This module considers the management of transformation from both an organisational and personal perspective.Ìý Students are introduced to key models of change and consider how they might be applied and the barriers to their effective implementation. ÌýThe module also provides an opportunity for students to learn about and to practice some of the skills required in the leadership of transformation. Ìý
Aims:
This module seeks to prepare students to work as people managers in a range of different organisational environments where change will be a part of organisational life.ÌýÌýLearners will be equipped toÌýrecogniseÌýtheÌýskills needed to facilitate change and to assess their own development needs in relation to these skills.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- Identify organisational and individual factors for change.
- Provide an argued critique of the main models of change and their applicability within different contexts.
- ÌýApply a systems thinking approach to organisational analysis
- Understand potential barriers to change – human and process issues and skills to overcome these.
- Provide a c ritical account of roles of key individuals and functions in the management of change.
- Demonstrate their own self-awareness to reflect on their personal learning and futureÌýÌýÌý development needs as a change leader.
Additional outcomes:
The course also aims to:
- Give students a critical appreciation of role of organisational development.
- Develop skills required for team working via practical group work in multi-cultural teams.
Outline content:
- Organisational factors for change
- Change models in context and the role of the change facilitator
- Individual personality factors and learning preferences
- Team formation – challenges and opportunities, overcoming barriers to change
- Facilitation skills and coaching
- Leading change
- Managing and communicating change programmes
- Organisational culture, values and ethics, engagement and commitment.
Global context:
The module uses global examples and case studies.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Lectures and seminars are used to provide the knowledge base in conjunction with independent reading. Students will be expected to share their ideas and contribute to classroom discussions in lectures and in tutorials. Group work and practical exercises are a key element of this module and students will need to work in small groups and in their assessment team. These activities will include a skill building element in line with the requirements of the assessment brief. InÌýaddition,Ìý the module comprises a reflective element whereby students are required to reflect on their development since the commencement of the MSc programme.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
These is no examination for this module.
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
- One group presentation in class. This is a consultancy type presentation dealing with a change issue. Students will be encouraged to apply a variety of theories and frameworks as suggest a suitable implementation approach (20% weighting)
- Using an online tool (e.g.MS Teams or BB Wiki) students will demonstrate their individual contribution to the group assignment (20% weighting)
- Skill development during the MSc year will be evidenced via a live (recorded) demonstration (10% weighting)
- Final written reflective assignment with accompanying evidence portfolio. This will reflect on learning from the three earlier pieces of coursework as well as other academic, personal and professional development during the MSc programme (50% weighting).

The presentations are in week 9 (University week 28). The assessed skill development should beÌýfinalised by end of first week of Easter holiday. Students submit their individual reflective assignment at the beginning of the summer term. Work count (minus appendices) 2500 words. Word counts for written work in this module are +/- 10%.

Lectures and seminars contain interactiveÌýexercisesÌýand these allow for formative feedback.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A weighted average mark of 50%.
Reassessment arrangements:
Resubmission via coursework (on a different topic) in August/ September.
