A study of the relationship between words and images in graphic communication.
This moduleÌýwill be taught inÌýeither Autumn or Spring.Ìý
Aims:
The module aims to develop an awareness of how verbal-textual and graphic elements interact to create meaning in graphic communication.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students should be able to
- Demonstrate an awareness of the techniques of combining words and images in graphic artefacts.
- Demonstrate creative thinking in response to specific design problem.
- Demonstrate exploration of alternative approaches to a problem.
- Present and explain links from referenced research to the development of ideas and overall concept.
- Demonstrate attenti on to detail in layout, typography and the presentation of images.
- Construct a convincing, well-made visualisation.

Outline content:
Topics will deal with the relationship of verbal, typographic and graphic form, and will variously include:
-Ìývisual-compositional relationships and their possible meanings
- parallel and contrasting verbal and visual effects
- word as image
- image as word
-Ìýnarratives without words
- typographic voice
- editing and framing
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Teaching methods will encompass practical project work and the critical analysis of exemplars. Description and critical analysis will involve the presentation of word and image concepts, methods and practices as shown in exemplars during seminars. Seminars will be presented by the module convenor (or associated tutor) and through student contributions that will additionally serve as preparation for assignments. Practical work will develop approaches to word and image though briefs designed to ex
plore aspects listed under assessable learning outcomes (above).

Summative assessment- Examinations:

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
A single practical project and accompanying report are submitted for summative assessment in summer term. Marking and moderating will take into account the formative assessment stage (see below) and any additional work the student has undertaken prior to final submission. If a proportion of the mark is awarded for participation, or meeting interim deadlines, this cannot be improved at resubmission stage.
Formative assessment methods:
Formative feedback is given during the project; further feedback (including an indicative marking rubric) is given after initial project submission; a final opportunity for feedback is offered in summer term to students making changes before final submission.
Penalties for late submission:
Non-standard penalties apply to the late submission of Part 3 practical work that is panel assessed in Summer Term. 10% of the total marks available for the work will be deducted from the final mark where work is submitted up to 24 hours late. Thereafter the mark falls to zero. Assessors may exercise discretion in the application of penalties.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 40% overall.
Reassessment arrangements:
Projects that bears a confirmed mark of less than 40 must be resubmitted by an August/September date to be notified.
