The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is an initial qualification for people with little or no previous English teaching experience and is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, part of the University of Cambridge. The Cambridge CELTA qualification is internationally recognised as an initial, practical English language Teaching qualification.Ìý The course is accredited by Reading University and Cambridge English, and combines 20 credits with a highly valued professional qualification
The external accreditation will require additional study commitment and 100% attendance.ÌýCandidates will also have to complete a pre-course task and attend a face-to-face interview.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The CELTA course combines theory and practice. Hands-on teaching practice with a group of adult learners is supported by expert training and developmental feedback. Knowledge to all the topics covered in the syllabus buds up while at the same time developing classroom skills.
The tutors will introduce you to aspects of teaching English as a Foreign Language, which you will then put into practice, teaching a group of students at two different levels. Thorough hands-on exper ience, your skills and confidence will enable you to work as an ELT.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
There are four written assessments of 1000 words each.Ìý
- Focus on the Learner - in week 6 of the Autumn TermÌý
- Language Analysis - in weeks 9 of the Autumn TermÌý
- Skills Task – in week 4 of the Spring Term.
- Classroom Reflection – in week 7 of the Spring Term.
Candidates are given support and guidance to complete each one.Ìý
All candidates complete a total of 6 hours of assessed teaching practice. The criteria for reaching the required standard are clearly specified; initially candidates are assessed against specific criteria and increase in challenge and complexity as the course progresses.Ìý
The final grade is based on continuous assessment of the written assessments, teaching practice, development through the course and the amount of support needed to meet the criteria.ÌýÌý

Formative assessment methods:
Following each teaching practice, the group will discuss what they observed and learnt from the lessons; this will be followed by detailed written feedback from the tutor. Supportive, developmental feedback, both oral and written, is at the heart of the CELTA course.
Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
The pass mark for the module overall is 40%, all components of the course must be completed.ÌýÌý
For the dual award, completion of the CELTA portfolio is also required, to include:
- Evidence of Teaching practice planning and preparation
- Tutor feedback
- Self-evaluation
- Written assignments
Reassessment arrangements:
Students who fail the module overall can resubmit the failed written assignment. Student who fail the teaching practice will be reassessed through an additional practice.
For external accreditation the four written assignments can be resubmitted once.
