Summary module description:

This module is the first of two modules intended to teach students advanced microeconometrics. The module considers how to select and apply econometric techniques for research. In addition students will develop their econometric and data software skills using Stata.

Aims:

The aim of this module is to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of common microeconometrics methods, beyond ordinary least squares methods, especially applying the techniques for research. Secondly the module will teach students how to apply these econometric techniques, using the statistical package Stata.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students should have the knowledge and understanding to be able to select and use appropriate econometric techniques for research, as well as understanding which post-estimation tests to apply and any caveats to the techniques. Students should be in a position to be able to perform their own data analysis for research using the statistical package Stata.

Additional outcomes:

Students will develop their, Stata, research and data handling skills, and be able to critically evaluate methods and approaches chosen by research papers.

Outline content:

Topics may include: panel data, discrete choice modelling and limited dependent variables

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

There will be a mix of lectures and computer exercises for each topic. There will also be introductory classes in the Autumn which will include an Introduction to the module and Introductory Stata classes.

Summative assessment- Examinations:

There is no examination for this module.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

There will be one Stata research based project.

Formative assessment methods:

There will be computer exercises for each topic.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A minimum overall mark of 50%.

Reassessment arrangements:

Re-examination for all modules takes place in August of the same year and students will submit a new project.
