Summary module description:
This module aims to introduce students to appropriate research tools and skills.

Aims:
This module aims to introduce students to appropriate research tools and skills.

Assessable learning outcomes:
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate:

  • Appropriate level of competency in using IT research tools
  • Appropriate level of competency in using bibliographic research tools
  • Appropriate level of competency in academic writing
  • Appropriate level of competency in designing a research project and writing a research proposal

Additional outcomes:
Because this module takes the form of a series of intensive workshops, students will also have the opportunity to improve their skills at group work and at teambuilding.

Outline content:
This module provides an introduction to research tools and skills which will be further developed in the core and option modules of the degree and in the dissertation. By the end of the module, students will have developed a draft proposal for their MRes dissertation, which will enable them to be paired with a dissertation supervisor.

This module is taught through a series of intensive workshops and seminars.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
This module is assessed by means of a short written assignment, due in by 1pm on Monday of Week 9 of Autumn Term.

Formative assessment methods:
Students will be given the opportunity to receive feedback by participating in a written and an oral formative exercise before submission of the final summative assignment.
