Type of module:

Summary module description:

Aims:
To extend the students' knowledge of partial differential equations, in particular to enable them to understand some of the elegant structures involved and be able to apply the results in appropriate problems.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:

  • use separation of variables and Green's functions in appropriate cases;

  • apply methods to problems in wave dynamics.

This module will be assessed to a greater depth than the excluded module MA3PD2.

Additional outcomes:

Outline content:

This module considers a central topic in mathematics, namely, partial differential equations, and takes their study further than previously, by investigation of elliptic problems using Green's functions.
