Summary module description:
This module provides a foundation of mathematical knowledge and methods for students in the Department of Computer Science.
Aims:
This module aims to provide a foundation of mathematical knowledge and methods for computer science students. This module also encourages students to develop a set of professional skills such as hypothesis generation and testing (in a technical sense), problem solving and numeracy.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module the students will be able to apply the mathematical techniques of algebra, discrete mathematics, matrices and vectors, statistics, and complex numbers.
Additional outcomes:
Outline content:
- Algebra: Revision of basic algebra, polynomials in x, roots of quadratic equations, factorising, plotting graphs of y=f(x), basic trigonometric functions (facilitated through tutorials).
- Matrices and vectors: Matrix operations; determinants, inverse, Gaussian elimination, eigenvalues, geometric applications.
- Discrete Mathematics: Propositional logic, combinatorics, induction, sets, relations and functions
- Probability and Statistics: use of probability distributions, exploratory data analysis, correlation.
- Complex numbers: need for; Cartesian and polar representation; manipulation, modulus and argument.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module comprises 2 lectures, and 1 tutorial per week.听 In the tutorials guidance is provided to help students understand the material and tests throughout the year used to provide feedback to the students.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
The University policy statement on penalties for late submission can be found at:
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 40% overall.
Reassessment arrangements:
One examination paper of听3 hours duration in August/September - the resit module mark will be the higher of the exam mark (100% exam) and the exam mark plus previous coursework marks (60% exam, 20% coursework, 20% class test).
