Summary module description:

This module aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of computer control and system identification.


Aims:
This module aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of computer control and system identification.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module the students should be able to analyse and design computer controlled systems, to understand the system identification process and to use linear system identification methods for modelling dynamical systems

EA2 topics: Control system design and analysis

Outline content:
Computer Control (10 lectures): Introduction to computer controlled systems. Sampling. Self-tuning regulator. Minimum variance control. Adaptive pole placement control. Deadbeat control. Introduction to fuzzy control.

System Identification (10 lectures): Introduction to system identification. The least squares method. Linear model structures: ARX and ARMAX. Pseudo-linear regression for ARMAX models. Determining the model structure. Model validation. Instrumental variables method. Recursive least squares identification.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module comprises 2 lectures per week, and one assignment.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
