Summary module description:

This module will give you the knowledge to design measurement systems to give the best possible performance for a wide variety of applications. It will also give you the ability to analyse the performance of measurement systems so that you can calculate their responsivity and detectivity. While much of the material is of general applicability to all types of measurement systems, the specific areas of ultrasonic measurement systems and pyrometry and radiometry will be covered in detail. The module is practically-based, with three laboratory practicals, which take place during the Spring Term, following the series of lectures which take place in the Autumn Term. Assessment is via an open book exam (70%) and the three practical reports (30%).

By the end of the module the student should be able to design measurement systems and calculate their responsivity and detectivity.

Outline content:
Measurement Systems: General measurement system and examples. Parameters characterising measurement systems. Principles of system design. Noise in passive networks and amplifiers. Noise figure & its measurement. Noise matching and noise equivalent circuits. Detection, phase sensitive detectors & applications. Ultrasonic measurement systems. Pyrometry and radiometry.

The module comprises 2 lectures per week, laboratory practicals and a revision tutorial.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
