This module aims to provide a unified description of mechatronic systems and their design.

This module aims to provide a unified description of mechatronic systems and their design.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, the student should be able to understand mechatronic systems, to appreciate appropriate design methods and apply the correct method to various design problems and applications.
Additional outcomes:
EA2 topics: general design methods.
Outline content:
Principles of engineering design, elementary mechanism theory, novel actuators and power transmission mechanisms, mathematical methods for mechatronics, and real-time software techniques. A number of case studies will be included such as novel actuator and transmission mechanisms, free-form-fabrication methods, legged machines, etc.

The module comprises 2 lectures per week, one assignment and some revision tutorials.
