Summary module description:

This module provides an introduction to the basics of law and management appropriate for the formation of a professional engineer. It will give you the basic practical knowledge to run your own business and commercialise your own project ideas. You will learn how to understand and analyse business models, how to conduct market research and how to write the technical section of a business plan aimed towards commercialising your own project ideas. The module is entirely assessed byÌýcoursework.

Aims:
To give the student an introduction to the basics of law and management appropriate for the formation of a professional engineer. To give the student the basic practical knowledge necessary to run their own business and to commercialise their own project ideas.

Assessable learning outcomes:
An ability to understand and analyse business models, and to conduct market research and write the technical section of a business plan with a view to commercialising the student's own project ideas.

Law and Business Management:
Organisations as systems; types of business structure; statutory requirements; business models; brands; marketing communications; leadership; project management; setting up your own business; market research; writing a business plan; financial aspects; patenting and protecting intellectual property.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module comprises 1 lecture per week plus independent study.

Business model analysis of a high tech company: 20%
Market research aimed at commercialising Part 3 project: 40%

Formative assessment methods:

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
