Fieldwork Health and Safety Risk Assessment

AIM:

To explain the University's approach to Fieldwork Health and Safety, and to introduce the concept of risk assessment for fieldwork activities.

OBJECTIVES ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Understanding the risk assessment process for fieldwork activities
  • To understand the University procedures for assessing and controlling the risks
  • To know the duties of a designated fieldwork supervisor

COURSE CONTENT:

  • The need for fieldwork risk assessment: Lyme Bay, and other fieldwork "disasters"
  • The elements of risk assessment: hazard identification; activities leading to exposure to risk; completing risk assessments
  • Staffing levels for fieldwork activities
  • University procedures: the role of a Designated Fieldwork Supervisor (DFS)
  • Informing the Emergency Control Centre of fieldwork activities
  • University procedures for travelling overseas

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Any member of staff who will either be in charge of planning fieldwork activities, or likely to deputise for a DFS. The course is also appropriate as refresher training for any current DFS who attended the course over 3 years ago.

PRE-COURSE PREPARATION:

Attendees should either bring along details of their own planned fieldwork activity, or a fieldwork activity that is currently undertaken in their Department / School. Ideally, they should read Safety Guide 32 - Fieldwork Activities, before they attend the course.

  • Wednesday 29th January 2025; 10:00 - 12:00
  • Wednesday 21st May 2025; 10:00 - 12:00

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS:

A small group of minimum 5 participants allows a much greater degree of participation by attendees; however, up to 12 participants can be accommodated. If you have a requirement for this course, please let Health & Safety Services know and a date will be arranged when numbers are sufficient to run a course.
